Points to consider….when purchasing a cattle loading ramp Well designed and constructed loading facilities result in quicker, safer loading with less stress on livestock carriers, stock and owners. The lead up to the loading ramp is an essential part to the overall loading facility. Safety is number one priority, with quick and easy access, in and out of the lead up yards. Curved lead up yards use natural stock movement principles to promote stock flow. Sheeted panels make animals focus on the exit and eliminates other distractions. Lead up yards that can break animals into ‘truck pen’ sizes, makes loading safer. Raised walkways can provide safe access to cattle and prevent having to climb fences. The slope of a loading ramp should be no more than 19 degrees. Some ramps are too steep and will inhibit stock flow. The internal width of a loading ramp should be a minimum of 710mm. Sheeted flooring should have drainage to minimise build up of manure and moisture. A level extension will improve cattle flow and provide operator access. A non-slip walkway and hand rail provides a safe way to access stock when loading. Truckie access doors should only swing inwards. Sheeted ramp sides prevent legs getting caught and improve flow. A swivel buffer that aligns the truck prevents gaps between the truck and the ramp. Ensure the ramp is stable. Semi-permanent ramps can tip over or move when a truck hits them if not secured properly.
