Points To Consider When Purchasing A Sheep Loading Ramp

• An 8m loading ramp is required to reach the third deck.
• 900mm internal width is recommended by truckies, this means if one sheep stops, another will continue to flow past. Single file sheep ramps are slow and inefficient.
• A non-slip walkway and handrail is needed for operator safety and access to stock when loading.
• Fully sheeted 1m sides promote sheep flow.
• A ramp should pull forward when it is raised, so there is no need to move the truck.
• A drop over truck bridge is recommended to minimise leg injuries.
• A self engaging safety bar for adjustable ramps ensures safety if a winch cable breaks.

Truck access to the loading facility should also be a consideration when looking at installing a new ramp. As a minimum trucks need approximately two truck lengths in front of the ramp. Livestock carriers also prefer to back in on their right hand side for better vision of the ramp. Ensure that the ground where the truck is parked when loading is level ensuring the truck is not leaning one way. A slight fall towards the ramp is always an advantage as trucks can roll back to the ramp.
